Why "Sing It, Don't Drill It" Actually Works for Times Tables

A linguist's take on why melody beats memorization drills


I, Erik Kara, have a PhD in Applied Linguistics and spent years teaching kids before becoming a parent of two myself. Handing a 7-year-old a flashcard deck and expecting joy is not going to work. Times tables are one of the first places kids hit real math anxiety, and drilling tends to make it worse, not better.

I still remember being in elementary school, listening to my classmates recite the times tables out loud before class to memorize them. It intimidated me so much. That memory has stuck with me for decades — which is, in a way, exactly the point of this article.

Why can't there be fun songs to memorize the times tables? We love repeating songs because rhymes and melody are so satisfying to our minds.

I've seen several takes on times tables songs on YouTube, but most of them add music around the times tables without much actual lyric-writing — and the same tune gets reused for every pair. That's not quite what I mean. Each pair deserves its own melody and lyrics. Only then does singing the times tables actually change what the experience feels like for a child.

Why Melody and Rhyme Actually Help — Not Just "Make It Fun"

There's real cognitive science behind this, not just a hunch.

Melody strengthens long-term recall. A 2002 study by Rainey and Larsen, published in Music Perception, had participants learn lists of items either spoken or sung to a familiar tune. Singing didn't speed up learning the first time around — but a week later, the group that had learned the sung version needed far fewer repetitions to relearn it. Melody's real advantage seems to show up in long-term retention, not instant recall — which matters, because times tables are a skill kids need to hold onto for years, not just for Friday's quiz.

Hearing may have an edge over seeing — and combining the two seems to work best. A 2017 study by Pillai and Yathiraj in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology tested 30 children aged 7–8 across three conditions: hearing information only, seeing it only, and experiencing both together. The children scored significantly higher on memory tasks through hearing alone than through sight alone, and scored highest of all when hearing and seeing were combined. The likely explanation: a heard word is encoded into memory directly, while a printed word first has to be mentally converted into a sound-based code before it can be held onto. Sight has an extra step that sound skips.

Text and melody may be stored differently in the brain, giving you two retrieval paths instead of one. Neuroscience research on song memory in patients with brain injury has pointed to something called dual encoding — text and melody appear to be stored via separate memory pathways. In practice, that means a multiplication fact set to melody gives a child's brain two different hooks to pull the answer back by, instead of just one.

This has been tested directly on times tables, too. A classroom study compared rhyme-based, melody-synced skip counting against traditional drill for the 3, 4, and 8 times tables. The rhyme-and-melody group showed meaningfully better long-term retention of multiplication facts than the group that used standard drilling.

Enjoyment lowers the anxiety that blocks learning in the first place. When learning is paired with enjoyment, attention tends to go up and anxiety tends to go down. Students who feel tense during traditional drill often relax when the same material comes through song — which matters, because an anxious brain is a worse learning environment no matter how good the material is.

The "Gamify It" Part Matters Just as Much as the Melody

The mechanism isn't just "music is nice." A silly story plus a catchy tune turns a fact a child is scared of forgetting into something they want to repeat — and repetition without dread is the actual goal.

A dry fact repeated twenty times is drudgery. A silly fact repeated twenty times inside a song a child chooses to hum in the car is just them having fun. Same number of repetitions, completely different stress response. And children who are having fun naturally invest more time in the activity, which in turn leads to more learning.

How This Shaped Times Tables with Rhyming Mnemonics

This is the exact thinking that went into building this book. Working with five voice actors and an illustrator, I gave every single times-table pair its own original melody and its own rhyming mnemonic — sung by real human voices, not a synthesized loop reused across every fact.

The book also includes a self-quiz mode, and the quiz itself is sound-based. That design choice comes directly from the hearing-versus-seeing research above: a child testing a pair out loud, rather than only reading it silently off a page, engages the modality that the evidence suggests sticks best for kids.

The goal was never to make times tables tolerable. It was to make them something a child actually wants to sing in the car.
